It has become a highly anticipated worldwide event. It has 201 countries compete in it. It has become this way because athletes strive to the best in their event for many years and because the world enjoys watching the athletes compete. First, the modern Olympics were reinstated by Baron Pierre de Coubertin who believed that the best way to bring back the ideas of mental, physical and spiritual excellence and the spirit of fair play through the Olympics. He started the IOC- International Olympic Committee in 1894 and started planning the first Modern Olympics (1). There were no awards in the modern Olympics until the 1904 Olympics that were held in St. Louis. Also the winter Olympics were not introduced until 1924 in Chamonix France (2). The early modern Olympics were different from the Olympics we know today but in some ways very similar. Secondly, many people like the winter sport of hockey because it has been a tradition since the “Miracle on Ice” in 1980. When a bunch of American college kids beat the Red Army of the Soviet Union (3). In the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games, team Canada is expected to win the gold medal of this event (4). The USA hockey team with forwards David Backes, Chris Drury and Patrick Kane with defenseman Erik Johnson, Brian Rafalski and goaltender Ryan Miller have a good chance of making a run in the 2014 Olympics because of the experience of all these players in the Olympic Games and in NHL (5). Since the addition of professional hockey players being allowed to participate, the United States is now always a contender in this event. In conclusion the Modern Olympics are an exciting event that takes place every four years with worldwide attention because the athletes are competing at their highest level and because the world roots for their own country with pride. There are 1040 days of preparation for the 2014 Sochi Japan Winter Olympics.
